Reading Online

Please comment on what it was like to read online. The two 'texts' that you read last night have some different features. Which text did you prefer? Which features did you feel would be useful for your students? Or particular students?

There was a clear difference in my level of engagement - I MUCH preferred reading the Rose chapters online textbook and really understand how UDL works in practise now. What seems to function as an 'alternative' textbook format is truly more accessible to everyone - isn't this UDL in practise? It certainly felt that way. I really enjoyed being able to pick and choose which links/actitivities I spent my time with/on and being able to support my reading with visuals.

We do not have high speed internet at home, but have contacted Ralcom so we can access it. Both my husband & I are taking courses now & badly need wireless internet. I went online here & looked at the How People Learn book, discovered it was available to download on Ipod. I decided I'd do this, as I have a 70 minute one way drive, and this would be a wonderful use of my time- to listen to the text on the road! I called my 22 year old son last night. He lost his Ipod snowboarding at Revelstoke last winter, & his birthday is next week, so he was happy to learn he will get a birthday Ipod after the course is over (unless I decide I like it so much that I'll keep it.) I then looked at the second reading: teaching every student in a digital age. It was full of links, and there was nothing to download really onto either the computer or my flashdrive, so that reading wouldn't work for me, either, without wireless internet. I cheked the next reading: the one from Alberta Education regarding the most effective ASCI technology projects. So last afternoon, before I left the university, I downloaded onto my flashdrive the 38 pages thinking I would read those when I got home. However I found a good movie had arrived in the mail from ZIP & my husband & I had a nice supper, & watched the movie, Into the Wild, instead! (Oops!) I'll do better once I get the text downloaded on my Ipod! But if any of you want to see our guest house website: it is www.hiddensprings.ca

I read the Rose chapters on line and enjoyed the various links I could click on to get extra information. It was very interactive and I liked that. However, by the time I got to the other chapters my eyes were tired so I ended up printing them out and reading them that way. Sometimes the eyes just cannot take any more computer time.It does take different skills to read on-line.
