I use my cell phone in a way that I did not think I ever would. I run a 'Social Group' for young people with Asperger's Syndrome outside of school hours. We meet at different places around the city and usually 'find' each other when one of us is lost or late via our cell phones. All the kids have cell phones and they're really good at using them to track each other down and arrange get togethers outside of the social group time. At the University, I always give my cell phone number to anyone who participates in any one of my research studies. My research typically involves teachers and people on the go who are difficult to get ahold of...I've collected more data on the phone in my car than is probably safe! I couldn't get along without my cell phone now...v

I'm actually going to go back more than 10 years- the last time I registered at university it was a process of physically lining up with a paper timetable and a pencil...you had to run all over campus signing up for various sections of your classes. Inevitably you would reach your final registration point only to discover the section you needed was full, and the only section available was one conflicting with something you already had. What a difference today, with this 'newfangled' Bear Tracks system. To be able to sit at home and point and click is quite wonderful.

I still remember being one of the first teachers 'selected' to get a MacIntosh computer in my room in 1986! I dove right in and so enjoyed all the 'beautiful' things I could make with it. Nowadays, I marvel at how much technology permeates my everyday life/teaching...and I still feel that I am only on the cusp...on a humorous note: this last mother's day, my family presented me with a GPS system for my car...it is a fantastic tool for directionally challenged people like myself!

It was great meeting you all today and thank you for the stimulating discussions - look forward to tomorrow.

I can now use a digital camera after my son taught me how. I also use a cell phone, a dvd player, a computer, and today even learned how to use a laptop and now a blog. Technology can be scary and confusing but it can be fun as well. Students are not afraid to try things out, they don't care if they mess up. I am slowly learning that most things can be undone if neccessary. I am looking forward to the steep learning curve ahead this week.

There is a lot of technology that I use now that I did not 10 years ago! In fact, I signed up for my first cell phone 10 years ago!! When debating with my daughter regarding her use of a cell phone - she wanted to know how old I was when my mom let me get a cell phone!! lol - I said they weren't invented yet and she couldn't believe it! Actually, I'm not sure how I functioned without one! I use text messaging to communicate with my children and my students, and sometimes even my husband!

When I first started teaching night school (not at NAIT but at another college) in 1993 I was one of the first to use powerpoint presentations! I'd have to wheel the "crash cart" into class and hook up the computer and projector - an now at NAIT we have SMART technology in every classroom! I show up with my jump drive or sometimes just download from WebCT!!

Technology has had a dramatic impact on my life - its amazing what you can do in a hospital room with a computer, internet connection and a credit card!! Pizza anyone? The nurses used to chuckle when the Pizza Hut delivery guy was trying to find our room on the unit!! You can also share pictures, pay bills, download assignments for marking and keep in touch with the office! The internet has changed alot of lives in the last 10 years!!

I didn't use my cell phone for texting until after I took a trip down to Australia. That was the main way that my friend uses to communicate to her friends and family. Now I use it all the time to text her as well as people here in Canada.

I didn't learn how to use Powerpoint until three years ago when I had to do a presentation for a class at the U of C. Now I use it all the time and teach my grade two students how to do it as well.

My daughter directed a play this year at her high school, called, "Back to the 80's". We wondered what in the world the play would be about! One of the scenes in the play had the "nerd" character walk on stage with an old style portable "bag" phone. It rang & he answered it, & told his classmates not to laugh: that in 30 years, every body would have one, & they'd be small enough to fit in your pocket! This suggestion was received with LAUGHTER & SCOFFING!
I supervised diploma exams at the same high school, & kids had to turn their cell phones in to a box at the front of the exam room. The announcement preceeding the beginning of the exams was that Alberta Education rules were such that if anyone was caught with a cell phone on their person during the exam, it would be taken away, the student would be given a zero for the exam, and would be prohibeted from rewriting for a year!
